Manila bound....

As Christmas is not the huge deal in Bangkok as it is in other cities I've worked in, I am suddenly free for vacation between Christmas and New Year....so Manila beckons...actually...not so much Manila as the Island Boy who will be off his island and in the big city visiting his parents...

Really the last place on earth I would have imagined going to for a dirty weekend!!

It just felt like any normal Saturday morning...

I can't help wondering what on earth is going to happen next...my day so far.

1. Entire cup of tea deposited over my little Macbook (aka the love of my life!!), I can't believe it...four years we've been together...four years....its terrible...its little face went black, its breathing light went off and there was a very nasty whirring noise... It doesn't look good...

2. On leaving my apartment I go down to the lobby of my building and discover all the residents being prevented from leaving (actually being kept in a holding pen!!) whilst some poor unfortunate lady went completely mental out in the entrance area, smashing glass, hurting herself..blood everywhere....this went on for about half an hour until some form of authorities came and carted her off....what a mess...

3. SMS from the Blue-eyed Boy...he's getting married...now that was a bolt from the blue....!!!! I thought he was confirmed bachelor material!!

In about an hour I'm heading out to the airport where Island Boy will hopefully be arriving from his little island of Cebu...

Hope there are no more shocks this weekend...my little brain can't filter any more information!

What....?!

Conversation with Island Boy this evening...

Madame Chiang: So, what did you get up to this evening
Island Boy: Went to see 'Transformers', you should go see it, it's fun...
MC: Nope, that sort of thing doesn't interest me...about as fun as watching paint dry
IB: Oh, What's that about?
MC: ....Long pause....
IB:..Ohhhhhhh!!!!

It's the little things in life...

Well, I finally have broadband at home...and IDD....and by the end of the week, will have a new kitty to add to the household
(Chiang Kai-shek has been terribly lonely), her name is Clara at the moment...possibly options...Sun Yat-sen or Soong May-ling!

Other than work and setting up home, have done fairly little in the way of touristy things...however, the Island Boy is due in this coming weekend...so no doubt there will be some sightseeing done then. But...if you class going 'out on the town' as the touristy thing then last weekend, in the company of the always intelligent E@L and the somewhat charming (in an 'arrogant tosser' sort of a way!) company of Indy, I ventured to Dream Hotel (Flava), Bed SupperClub and Q Bar....I must say, it would have been hard to find better company for such an outing...

The Sunday evening, in the company of the same two reprobates mentioned above...saw an Indian dinner being consumed under the watchful eye of Yasser Arafat by way of a huge framed pictures directly opposite E@L's seat....I guess that will teach him to pick the restaurant of choice from a review posted above a urinal in a girlie bar at Nana Plaza.... Seriously... you can't make this stuff up!!!

Things I won't miss...

This is the first of a two part post...the second - not surprisingly, and more postively - will be on things that I will miss...this, as titled, is things that I will not miss....

Taxis
I won't miss the smelly, dirty, about to fall apart taxis that I have been using on a daily basis since I arrived here.... I have clocked up four accidents in a taxi and one disintegration (under the Shaw-Edsa flyover - the back wing fell off a taxi whilst we were sitting in the middle of the junction waiting for the traffic to clear - the driver got out...asked me to move into the front seat, whilst he man-handled the back wing into the back seat!!). Or the taxi that mid-ride to Makati said he needed to do something urgent stopped the car, got out, flipped up the bonnet and started fiddling around with the engine.

Taxi drivers (there is a flip side to this one - see the positive post later!)
I wont miss the conniving, scamming drivers...the ones that ask for extra money due to traffic, weather, time of day/night, general political situation etc etc....
I wont miss the drivers that it is a battle to get them to use their meters
I wont miss the drivers who run out of petrol mid-ride (happened twice), or on one occasion, the driver who mid-ride asked if I could advance the fare so he could fill up with petrol... actually this made me quite sad - it just goes to show the hand-mouth lifestyle that the lower classes here have...nobody should have to deal with that...worker or customer.
And I sure as hell wont miss being turfed out of taxis because either the driver has changed his mind, or I refuse to pay any extra over and above the meter.... I've been turfed out on Edsa three times (usually late at night - not fun) and once in Cebu, fortunately in the middle of Lapu-Lapu city where there was a friendly policeman!

The Airport
I don't know where to start....!!!!! It's a disaster....organisation, cleanliness, security, its all bad....Manila International Airport does not have one redeeming feature that I can think of.....from the wildlife, to the terrible shopping and f&b facilities, lack of a decent bookstore, the process for getting to check in....its all bad....and arrival at the airport is even worse!

Waste of resources
The Philippines has a lot going for it...language, education level, fantastic tourist sites and locations, vivid history, diving, lovely resorts, a generally friendly and welcoming population, great shopping, relatively good weather..... so why is it not a booming, flourishing nation with a bright and rosy future.... the political situation and the government are mostly to blame but...and I tell my Filipino friends this....the problem is 'resignation'...the other day whilst catching up on blog reading...a post by Torn & Frayed, had one sentence in it that whilst in this case was referring to political killings, I think refers to the Philippines in general....

He is battling against the biggest ally of all politically motivated killings—the resignation of the Filipino people.

he goes on....

An almost unlimited well of stoicism it this country’s greatest strength and its most overpowering weakness. It sees balikbayans through the most terrible experiences from Jeddah to Singapore to LA and almost all points in between and somehow gives them the strength to come out of it all laughing. It enables Filipinos at home to smile despite low wages, poor living conditions, and some of the world’s worst traffic. It is an absolutely necessary quality in the often brutal world of modern Manila.

Yet stoicism has its limits. Putting up with crap is all well and good, but there comes a point when you have to change the world instead of just putting up with it

....I copied pasted, because i couldn't have written it better myself. Never have I come across such a waste of resources, such complete and utter chaos and such resignation..... it's tragic.

The Peeing
I don't understand why Filipino men have this urge to unzip their trousers and pee where ever they wish..... it is disgusting and its unhygienic.... Whilst in BKK I actively looked to see if this was an Asian thing (although have not seen it in HKG or Singapore!) but in three days...not one guy standing close to a wall, lamp post, tree etc relieving himself.... here I see on average three or four a day when out and about.... its not nice.

The staring
It's not polite and given the number of foreigners that have been in the country, one would think we were not a rarity...granted if I go way out into the provinces...being blonde and rather - how can I put this -'busty'??!!, I can understand that I'll get a few looks...but in the Metro Manila area there is no excuse for the out and out staring that goes on...whilst waiting for a cab, walking down the road, in a mall, wherever...again, its not nice....

The overall feeling of chaos, disorganistion and dirt
Self explanatory....I loathe it!

The supermarkets
Quality, items available, supply and again, organisation - all lacking....although I would say that the new Rustans at Rockwell is an improvement...a few more like that would make life more pleasant.... they even have conveyor belts at the checkout counters (I'm a simple soul really), and it's clean, bright and doesn't smell....!!! OK, I know I'm being fussy - when we lived in The Gambia in the mid-80s we only had butter for four months of the year.... a real treat was a mini tin of condensed milk, meat was purchased in the market - usually half a cow and we would take it home and butcher it... so yes, this is an improvement....but on the other hand, we are now in 2007, 20 years on, in a huge city with a large expat population...

The overall lack of trust
There is an overriding lack of trust in this country that is shown in the way that purchases are handled in a store (packed and checked off against the receipt, not being able to leave without the receipt visible), the way that credit card purchases are handled, the way that people are frisked going into and out of establishments, even moving out of my apartment needs security checks etc (and its my belongings that are being checked...as if I have broken into another apartment and stolen their items). I realise that this lack of trust is due to previous abuses of trust, due to the levels of poverty in the country....but still it is quite disheartening that this is the case.

I think that's basically it....no doubt I shall think of other annoyances but, off the top of my head, these are the ones that have bothered me the most whilst I have been here!

When I told my friends and colleagues two years ago that I was moving to Manila...to a man (and a woman), they could not believe that I would do something that daft...nobody, including those that had worked here had a positive word to say about the country.

Here I am two years later and the same friends and colleagues are amazed that I have managed two years here. Quite a few people that I have spoken to don't understand my frustrations with day to day life here...but (and I have gently explained this to them!) these are people who have drivers (removes the taxi stresses!), helpers for shopping, running errands etc, and other little bits of help like collecting things from the post office (all things that relieve stress)...Granted, compared to the average Manila resident I lead a charmed life here, I can use taxis instead of buses, I do have the spending power to shop and eat in the better places and I live in a secure apartment.

The reason I guess I get so agitated about all of this is that, if all goes according to plan, my time in the Philippines is not yet over...Bangkok will be just a short 'break' for us....I repeat, if all goes according to plan (which in my life it rarely does), I shall be returning to these shores to set up home with the Island Boy! Which means that I will have to face this all over again....

However, we're not back for long!

Off to sunnier climes tomorrow night...a week in Cebu, with a few days in Bohol (apparently, allegedly!) seeing the chocolate hills and stroking tarsiers (at least that's what I'm telling you!!!).

It just doesn't stop...!!!

As I think I mentioned a week or so ago...I am really busy at work and as a consequence am not really reading the paper, absorbing the news or really coming up with much blogging material....anyway, here are a few odds and sods...

The ballet on Saturday evening was wonderful....I just thought it such a shame that the theatre was so empty...events like this should be better marketed and promoted and really should be much better attended. I only really had two quibbles...the first was that the music was 'canned'; a live orchestra would really have added to the event, the second was that I spent a fair amount of the evening concerned we were going to lose a couple of the dancers - particularly the male dancers during 'Carmen', the floor seemed overly slippery! City Boy had organised box seats for us...it is actually quite nice sitting higher than the stage, particularly during the large group dances.

As the Island Boy was in town, the three of us decided to go and look at Serendra, the new development over at the Fort. We had dinner at Hossein's which, although nice, really is not authentic Arabic or for that matter Indian food...dessert was at Cupcakes by Sonja...it amazed me that people would queue for cupcakes...and then I realised...the queue inside is only because the girls inside are so chaotic...it took about 20 minutes to get three cupcakes and two teas and a coffee. The cupcakes are excellent (if quite expensive - the total bill was about P500)but the tea and coffee left a fair amount to be desired - luke warm water, a tea bag and powdered milk does not a good cup of tea make!!

The rest of the weekend was spent pottering about town...the Island Boy seems to find that Cebu does not offer everything to satisfy his sartorial requirements...the predominant issue seems to be a lack of Zara outlets...and if his hair was anything to go by...a barber!!!!! He arrived looking like Elvis during the latter part of his career (hair only!), give him a white rhinestone jumpsuit and he could have done a passable impersonation! Fortunately he was returned to Cebu looking more normal!

I managed to catch the tail end of a BBC world documentary about OFWs, part of their 'Migration around the world' series what I saw seemed very good, the one comment that rang very true but is very unfortunate was that the 'present overseas workers are funding the overseas workers of the future'...in other words a self perpetuating problem.

Bits and pieces

When I was at boarding school we had 'tuck boxes' into which was put your collection of sweets for each term. Every day after lunch the sweets were dolled out...Do you remember these...Monday to Friday you got three sweets, Saturdays four and Sundays five...obviously not all sweets were equal...10 smarties made up one sweet, one pear drop was one sweet, a sherbet dip dap was five sweets so only on Sundays could those be enjoyed...liqorice shoelaces were two sweets. I have to say that remembering this, its hardly surprising I'm borderline obsessive compulsive! During exeats, grand-parents, uncles and aunts would take us down to the sweet shop to stock up up the tuck box and we would spend quite some time working out which was the best value in relation to our sweet allocation...how long they lasted was the best indicator...for me, I always went for pear drops (which is why the smell of nail varnish now always reminds me of boarding school!!), sherbet dip daps and strawberry and cream boiled sweets! Anyway, after every exeat luggage was checked for sweets to be added to the tuck box, God forbid you would squirrel some away for illegal consumption.

All from a wonderful website called A quarter of, thanks to the kind Scottish reader who sent me that gentle reminder!

The Island Boy's contribution to my collection of reading material was The Bad Girl's Guide to Getting What You Want, no idea where he got the idea I was a 'Bad Girl' from...but there you go. If I weren't already a Bad Girl I could follow the three day transformation plan in the book with suggestions such as...

Day one, To-do list: Buy fruits and vegetables
Day two, To-do list: Buy banana and cucumber
Day three, To-do list: Buy vibrator

So that was Christmas...and this is Boxing Day!

Those of you who have to work over Christmas know that the festive days eventually become just like any other just slightly noiser and busier!

Fortunately I am off tomorrow and Thursday, and the Island Boy is in town having spent Christmas with his family...so I have some company as it seems that this year all my friends are out of town (varying distances!) and I have had no one to go out to play with!!

The plan for tomorrow, some serious sleeping in, the Island Boy arrived in Manila on the evening of the 23rd...and we sat up talking and demolishing a bottle of Absolut Raspberry until about 5am...not good when work starts early in the morning! Am definitely getting a little too old for that lark!

And the rest of the world...predictably at Christmas the world seems to quieten down...

The Daily Telegraph has started their review of 2007, the first is the fashion review of the year..Kate Moss, the older woman and M&S...obviously not a great year for the world of fashion!!!

The Queen's speech available as a podcast, along with her use of Estuary English, HM really is catching up with her 'subjects', by this time next year she should be nicely dropping her 'aitches', should we blaming that on the late Diana, Princess of Wales?

speaking of dropping 'aitches'.. Eliza Doolitle!

Straight from the horse's mouth on the the whole 'cross on the air' BBC saga, not to be confused with the whole 'cross in the air' (well in reality only at check in!) BA saga.

And for those of you who missed it last year, I still have MLQ3's Christmas column from last year pinned to my noticeboard in the office...has anything changed? Has the situation improved at all?...Like Hell it has....

Of course it wouldn't be the festive season in the Philippines if there weren't headlines like this...2 hit by stray bullets, 34 hurt by firecrackers, and it's not even New Year's Eve yet....

My favourite SMS Christmas greeting this year....

'Gloria stops con-ass, delays con-con, reskeds ASEAN summit, so b4 she postpones Christmas 2, let me greet u & ur family'

For someone not directly involved in the Philippines...con-ass is the locally recognised abbreviation for Constituent Assembly, and con-con the abbreviation for Constitutional Convention, Gloria refers to the little one.

I told you it was quiet out there......!!!!

Hospitality differences...

It has come to my attention over the last few days that here in the Philippines when one has house guests one is expected to give up ones bed for the visitors, none of this sleeping on the sofa, day bed, floor etc etc...

However, when the Island boy comes to visit he gets the day bed thingy in the living room...so when I was telling this to one of my colleagues today he made some comment in a rather horrified tone of voice along the lines of "You mean your guest sleeps in the living room?"..

The only thing I have in my defence is that, knowing that the Island boy cannot function without coffee in the morning, I actually bought (for the first time ever!) coffee and made him a cup of coffee! Those that know me in real life would be horrified and surprised...I loathe coffee, the smell, the taste, the slightest whiff has been known to make me throw up in the past, the problem is so bad that past coffee drinking boyfriends ended up having to give up coffee altogether as kissing someone who's recently drunk coffee is really, really not good!!!!!

So, I may not give up my bed, but if you ask me, the coffee in the house is a far, far greater sacrifice and a far greater show of hospitality!

I say a little prayer for you.....

The ASEAN summit kicks off in Cebu on Sunday....personally I think this event has been challenged in the 'luck' department since the beginning....first all the issues over the new Convention Centre..will it be finished? Yes, it will, no it won't, yes it will, no it won't...ok well maybe parts of it will be finished....plus a liberal dose of criticism for the 'Imeldific' renovations (I've been wanting to use that word for a while!!)

And now...multiple terror threat warnings, and if that's not enough...a possible storm.....

And just to add to my personal concerns, my two favourite men in the Philippines will both be there for the next week....

Friday afternoon:
610 kms east of Southern Leyte
Saturday afternoon:
190 kms southeast of Guian, Eastern Samar
Sunday afternoon:
it will be in the vicinity of Mactan, Cebu

I'm beginning to feel like Dot Cotton....

It seems that my spare bed has become a place that my guests feel comfortable leaving their clothing behind! This morning whilst sorting my laundry I found a shirt that the Island boy had left behind from his last visit...

Is this the way that the single men of the new millenium get their laundry done...one piece at a time, by a different woman each time?....or do I just have very forgetful guests? I can't help feeling there are more efficient ways of getting one's laundry done!!

Sometimes it's nice not to go out of town!!

I've seen a glut of films this week...4 in a week..that should keep me quiet for a while!

Saturday night was Borat...it is absolutely hysterical and at the same time shocking...I found it hard to think of a group of people he doesn't insult in the movie. I don't think I'l be recommending the movie to my mother...I could be wrong, but I think she may be a little 'shocked'! Sunday evening was Happy Feet...cute, but definitely for kids and not for adults, admittedly the only other animated movies I have seen have been the Shrek movies so I was expecting something like that, i.e. slightly more adult content; no matter, the penguins were cute and there were some amusing lines but that was about it!

After pottering around Manila on Saturday afternoon and indulging myself in some wishful thinking I wandered over to the new kid on Roxas Boulevard, the G Hotel (2090 Roxas Boulevard), as mentioned by Carlos last week. It's an interesting property and from a design point of view a lot of thought has gone into it...the property is completely black and white...from the carpets in the lobby, to the uniforms to the floor tiles. It's all very smart, but what worries me is keeping it looking smart - black is easily chipped and white is very easily dirtied as can already be seen around the property. The staff are very friendly and seem to be spending the majority of their time offering show rounds, on Saturday out of 50 rooms, 45 were occupied - not bad considering that they only opened on 17th November. There is a nice little cafe/bar on the 7th floor which has a nice breeze and a sideways-on view of the Bay. The basics of the hotel are very nice, but it needs a few final tweaks just to get it 'right'...

The coffee shop on the ground floor

the view from the bar/cafe (Mirage) on the 7th floor

The views from the function room on the 7th floor, actually a very nice room with a terrace running around the front and the side...perfect for a small wedding.

The pool, really quite small, but perfectly adequate and catches the sun most of the day, the first picture shows the cafe/bar just to the right of the pool.

And finally, the facade...

If you're planning on driving down there, the hotel has a huge parking lot just next to the hotel.

Sunday saw the day spent at Greenhills, the Island Boy from Cebu being in town and not having been to Greenhills for a long while! So lunch, shopping/pottering and a movie...the branch of Fully Booked at Greenhills is actually pretty good, I picked up a few books I had been looking for; I had always thought it rather small but had missed the areas at the back and the upper level!

Dinner on Sunday was down at the Bay at So Woo, a Korean restaurant at Harbour Square (opposite the CCP), food was excellent and the added bonus was sitting outside on the terrace overlooking the bay with a lovely clear night of stars and lights. A quick hop, skip and a jump over to the G Hotel to see how it shapes up at night...terrace still nice, but they seriously need to do something about the lighting at night!

So, all in, a nice relaxing weekend - nothing too stressful, just enjoying what Manila has to offer and enjoying the nice weather...the company helped too!
