A winner....or at least a finalist

Last night...the Darwin Awards came up in discussion..

We salute the improvement of the human genome
by honoring those who remove themselves from it.

and today a quick look at the BBC tells me that we have another candidate...honestly, who in their right mind would use "threatening words" whilst boarding an aircraft...

I guess this is the answer:

A witness told local television that the man frantically ran down the aisle of the Boeing 757 and that a woman with him said he was mentally ill and had not taken his medication.

So I guess - he wasn't in his 'right mind'....

Hi, Mme Chiang. I think the marshalls could've considered that what the wife was trying to tell them MIGHT be true. But yes, tough call. Maybe they could've maimed him or knocked him out some other way...

Frayed, sorry but no. As horrifying as this is, if he had a bomb (and they had to assume he had) then they have to shoot to kill. Shooting him but leaving him alive still allows a genuine bomber the chance to trigger the device.

For that reason any security officer who believes he is stopping a suicide bombing will only shoot to kill, in the head, with multiple shots (to jelly the brain and completely destory the nervous system), to make sure that there is no possibility that the target can set the bomb off.

They could realistically pay no heed to the wife - they did not know what we know now - it could have been a ploy for all they knew.

If on another occasion there is a bomb and they hesitate after seeing the suspect ignore their instructions (especially reaching into the bag) and they did not shoot and then a fully laden plane's fuel tanks were set off by the explosion there would be an outcry as well as hundreds of deaths.

They had nno choice.

Claiming to have a bomb is essentially suicide and that is a sad fact.
