The "State of the Nation" speech that should have been......
Up and about fairly early this morning....had a quick flick through the papers and found MLQ's column for the day.
I am not Filipino, and to be honest cannot profess a love for the country...however, reading this column made me realise how incredibly tragic it is that a nation of people as friendly, welcoming and generally happy and cheerful as the Filipinos...should in this day and age, have to have such a true article written about their capital city/country.

One of the interesting things about where I work is I work with a lot of Filipinos. They have an interesting approach to life and their culture..and sadly, a sense of entitlement some times that is particularly frustrating. '
The problems in the Philippines are not insurmountable, but will require a huge change in mindset by its people and government. The fact that 25% of the population works overseas should be a national embarassement itself.....
Those working outside the country actually seem to be treated as heros with the president picking one day in December to go to the airport in order to personally greet these returning heroes...it seems to be something they are very proud of...constantly touting the fact that without their people..various cities would fall apart...HKG springs to mind with the Amahs..etc.
Personally I think the biggest problem here seems to "acceptance"..it's always been like that...so it always will be...almost a case of "Inshallah" in a predominantly Catholic country...
