the owner of my 'possible' apartment took a deposit for it yesterday from someone else....after my agent spoke to them and told them that I wanted the apartment...
so need to reassess.....

Sounds like business as usual in the Philippines. The country just does not work right........
I had a similar fiasco here in Hong Kong back in 1997. But the broker took the deposit check and then refused to deliver me a contract. It ends up that they just wanted the check since they were really intent on selling the rpoperty and a check in hand was used to drive the buyer to pull the trigger.
It's all very frustrating...particularly as my personal effects arrived in Manila two days ago...and the cats must be here by 25th October......think I may have to start casting my housing net a little further afield....

Are you dead set on Ortigas? Why, because it's near work? There is much more choice in Makati and if you work near Mega Mall you can catch the MRT to and from work. It's very efficient, clean and unbelievably cheap. There is also much more to do in Makati. Sometimes you can live too close to work ...
You have somewhere you can put the cats temporarily?
Unfurnished is best to be honest -- there is lots of nice and reasonably priced furniture here.
r.e. moggies...a colleague's wife has very kindly offered to take them if needs be...
r.e. Ortigas...I usually finish work about 9:30/10pm...don't really want to be travelling around then...just be able to pop down the road and go home..However am now wondering if I need to rethink this...
r.e. furniture...have now decided that I will take unfurnished...but want the basics fridge, air-con and oven...which I believe is described as semi-furnished!
