See you later...

I think it's a Scottish thing....when ever I say good bye to someone, either face to face or on the phone, I generally add..."see you later" as part of the farewell... it doesn't matter if the chances of me seeing that person within the next 10 years are slim...I still trot out the phrase...

Only the Scots I know understand it and don't take it face value...and only the Scots seem to use the phrase...

Here I am very careful about using the phrase as most people don't get it...so I have learnt to be wary of how I end conversations...but this afternoon I slipped up...I finished talking to one of my suppliers...said "see you later" and put the phone down....

half an hour later the same supplier walks into the office...I questioned why they were there...and their answer.."Well you said 'see you later' so I guessed I had forgotten to note down an appointment, and here I am"....

Fortunately their office is not too far from mine....

"See you later" is my usual goodbye as well...I think with friends we just hope it to be true...

It is the norm in Australia also. I cannot remember getting into trouble with saying that in HK.

It's perfectly normal in Ireland and Australia in my experience. France too, if I recall my brief time there correctly.
