It's not just Hong Kong...

...that has cornered the market in strange names...

They do seem to have strange names in the Philippines. I liked the "just call me Babe," part of the article.

Well, everyone knows that Hong Kong girls select strange names. And after all these years, I have gotten used to girls calling themselves "Rainbow," "Love," "Apple," "Cookie," etc.

However, at times, perfectly normal Chinese names sound strange when spoken (or written) in English.

Example:

About two decades ago, I met a man whose first two words to me were "Fan Look!" as he shook my hand.

I looked around and above, sadly, there was no fan in sight. I had half a mind to tell him "Air conditioner, don't look!"

But before I could make a fool of myself, he presented his business card. And beautifully printed on his card was his name, "Fan Luk, Director..."

Ciao!

My padre named me "El" and my middle name is "Guapo". Thank god he sold his soul to the diablo!

Hi MC! Long time no speak. Been away in chilly Beijing. And loving it.

Your post here reminded me about how I wanted to write the Great Hong Kong Novel, one that had a family whose uber-yuppie wine snob Dad had called his three daughters Chianti, Bordeaux and Valpolicella. He also has a messed up son called Gewurtztraminer.

What do you think? Hope you're having sunny travels! Ba-byyyyyye!

Stefan & Dave,
I'd buy the book...but the names sound too "Footballer's wives"!...you need to go with more typical HKG names...Muffin, Apple, Garfield and Munchkin (yes, really - he was a student of mine a few years back!)....
Sunny travels are wonderful..Koh Samui is lovely!
